What Should be the Standard Weight of Chicken Eggs ?
I went to sari-sari store to bought an egg. I asked the store owner about its class base on weight. Ano po and size nito manang? The store owner told me it was a large egg.
I went home and weighed it on my small digital weighing scale. The egg weighed 45 grams. Then I compared it to U.S. weight classes for eggs:
Size Weight per egg
Jumbo greater than 2.5 oz. or 71 g
Extra-Large (XL) greater than 2.25 oz. or 64 g
Large (L) greater than 2 oz. or 57 g
Medium (M) greater than 1.75 oz. or 50 g
Small (S) greater than 1.5 oz. or 43 g
Peewee greater than 1.25 oz. or 35 g
The egg is not large large after all. It fall under the small classification. I paid the amount for a large egg but I got a small one.
That was unfair. I lose 12 grams of egg weight. Its was not a big deal if your buying just one egg but it will cost you a lot for 12 dozens of eggs. Dozen x 12 x 12 grams is equal to 1728 grams or 30 eggs. This means 5 egg losses for every 24 eggs.
Refer to this table if you are buying eggs buy dozens.
