When I was still working as Food Research Assistant, we conducted two studies: Barako Coffee in Filter Bags and Herb Coffee Flavored Coffee in Filter Bags.
The problem we encountered was purchasing filter bags. This might not be as hard if we had the budget cause purchasing it from possible suppliers would be easy. Unfortunately we don’t had the budget for the costly packaging.
As an alternative, we purchased a cloth called “pilon”. We chose the thickness enough to hold coffee grounds and provide a good water permeability. This cloth can be sealed with a heat sealer. Take a look at bottom picture.
Pilon cloth can be bought from Divisoria or from any cloth store.
The manual method of making filter bags is suitable only for experimental processing. Ask a friend mechanic or a nearby machine shop to fabricate a low-cost packing/sealing machine.

Ma’am Fe N. Dimero told me that a tea store inside Farmer’s Plaza Cubao is selling tea filter bags in small quantities. She forgot the store name (sorry!). If you are living in Manila, Quezon city and other nearby provinces, going there and finding the store may not hurt.

We are coffee dealers known as Mbinga Coffee Curing Company, found in Tanzania, we are interested to start packing filter coffee bags.
Please may you advice us on how to start, and the necessary equipments as well as their price and how to get filter bags, appropriate sealing machine and any other necessities.
We will be glad to get your assistance to this.
Regard,
David

I think the best way to start is finding a toll packer. It will save you time and effort. It is the quickest and perhaps the cheapest way to start. You can get idea from them what are the needed materials and equipment if you find it profitable and want to pack on your own. In case the venture is not feasible, closing down the product is also easy since you never purchased expensive equipment right away.
hello! i find your articles very useful.keep it up! i’m currently assisting a cooperative who is engaged in rice coffee/tea. do you have any updates on suppliers for tea bags? and can you recommend the most suitable packaging for rice coffee? they are currently using PET bottles and also aluminum pouches with sticker labels. the PET bottles are quite costly (P11.00) as an alternative they are using aluminum SUP.
thanks!
pack it like packing real coffee. the most suitable and affordable is the laminated aluminum foil. it can be purchased from the company below for low volumes.
