Health Benefits of Patola (Sponge Gourd, Luffa Actangula)

Patola also known as Luffa acutangula or sponge gourd. This commodity is popularly known as vegetable and bath sponge.

I am gathering health information about this vegetable. The following are the data that I have gathered so far:

1) Analyses of the unripe fruit show it is good source of calcium and iron and an excellent source of phosphorus. A fair source of vitamin B.
2) The root is used as a purge in Russia, eject the contents of the stomach through the mouth.
3) In India the root is laxative and is used in dropsy – swelling from excessive accumulation of watery fluid in cells, tissues, or serous cavities.
4) The decoction of the leaves is used in Java for uraemia and amenorrhea. Uraemia is accumulation in the blood of nitrogenous waste products (urea) that are usually excreted in the urine
5) The leaves are applied locally in splenitis, hemorrhoids, and leprosy.
6) The juice of the fresh leaves is dropped into the eyes of children in granular conjunctivitis, and also prevent the lids from adhering at night on account of adrenal variety of diabetes.
7) The juice of the leaves is used as an external application to sores and the bites of venomous animals.
8) An infusion of the ripe fruit (1 in 80) is used in doses of one to two ounces, 20 to 30 grains of the dried kernel.
9) The oil of the seeds is used in skin complaints.
10) The infused seeds are given as a purgative and an emetic – a medicine that induces nausea and vomiting.
11) The dried fruit is powdered and made into a snuff for those suffering from jaundice – yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes caused by an accumulation of bile pigment (bilirubin) in the blood; can be a symptom of gallstones or liver infection or anemia.
