Possible Dangers of Bisphenol A (Plastic and Tin Can)

Authorities are studying the possible effects of Bisphenol A to human health. The said substance may interact with our hormone systems, the so called endocrine disruptor. Animals are proven to interact with endocrine disruptor but the link of Bisphenol A to human is not yet conclusive.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical that is mainly used in combination with other chemicals to manufacture baby feeding bottlesplastics and resins. For example, BPA is used in polycarbonate, a high performance transparent, rigid plastic. Polycarbonate is used to make food containers, such as returnable beverage bottles, infant feeding (baby) bottles, tableware (plates and mugs) and storage containers. Residues of BPA are also present in epoxy resins used to make protective coatings and linings for food and beverage cans and vats. BPA can migrate in small amounts into food and beverages stored in materials containing the substance.

The use of Bisphenol A for packaging materials is regulated.

The Plastic Materials and Articles in Contact with Food (England) Regulations 2009 permit the use of BPA in the manufacture of plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, provided that no more than 0.6 mg/kg migrates into the food.
